Ps. We were having lunch in the meat packing district when this married couple in the last photo walked by. She was a beautiful bride indeed. I was doing the ‘awwwww’ whilst the guys were doing the ‘he just signed his life away’ comments and what not. lol.

This pretty much rounds up my photo’s from my recent trip to NYC. Editing was a haggle because i took almost five hundred images, and of course not every single one was blog worthy. Most of the images I’m keeping for memories and well, the rest on here is for this blog. With that said, i know some of my friends that i met in NY are anxious to read what my opinion of the city is. For the first two days i was in NY, i kept saying the city reminded me of Chicago and i didn’t think i would live there. On day 3 and 4, i gladly told myself that i could possibly live in NYC. Coming from a laid back suburb city, i was really overwhelmed by NY. The subway system, the city’s fast paced lifestyle and all the walking that i had to do. I was full of complaints about walking since i don’t remember the last time i ever walked this much in my life. In Nashville, i never go anywhere without a car, so you can imagine how frustrated i was when i had to walk to the subway, then walk to wherever we were going, be it the museum, or just to eat. Anyways, after getting used to this, i totally took the city in and enjoyed every moment i was there. From the friends i finally got to meet after talking on social networks for as long as i can remember to great food to amazing shops, i can definitely understand why this city is one of the greatest in the world. I had the chance to visit most of the stores i drool over on the internet, had the best cranberry and vodka ever, and most importantly i formed friendships that will have a lasting impact on my life. Thank you to everyone that took out time to be with me whilst i was up there, (TJ, Troy, George,Akua,Walter and Ronnie) i know you guys have busy lives, but you still kicked it with me and made my stay a great one. Thank you…

Now, is NYC the best city I’ve been to so far? No it’s not. Miami still takes the cake for me

I was going through my Tumblr dashboard and chanced upon a post on Ken Jeong,MD. He’s also known as Mr. Chow, you know the pimp from the comedy, ‘The hangover’. In this said post, I found out that Mr. chow, the Asian pimp was a medical doctor in real life. He actually has a degree in internal medicine. Now, iwas quite surprised but then again I was excited. Let me explain why I was excited. Growing up in Ghana, I loved art—Painting, graphic design, photography, textiles, the whole nine yards. I majored in ‘graphic design’ whilst in high school(in Ghana, you had to declare a major in high school). When I graduated, I’m assuming everyone thought I would be some type of guru in Graphic design or whatever. When I finally got to college, I once again declared a major in graphic design. This was how much I loved the arts. In the middle of my major, I had the opportunity to move to the US. When I got here my mum drummed the idea of being in the health care field into my head. I was adamant at first but I decided to give it a shot. In the process, I really enjoyed taking care of people. This was not my first love, being in the health care field, art was but I also realized that there were other kids who had way better talent than me. As of now, I’m officially heading into my major in the health care field. I’m really excited about this but at the same time, I find myself really tied into the arts. Friends kept asking me why I was going into health care and not pursing the arts. For some reason, most people thought I was doing it for the money or doing it just to please my family. My question was, why can’t I have both? Looking at Mr. Chow, not only is he a pimp in hit movies, he’s in other hit shows like Scrubs, enjoying what he probably loves, and at the same time he can rely on his degree if he needs to. In between auditions for roles, how do you think he was taking care of himself? Even if he wasn’t a doctor then he had to have a job to survive. Also, what most people don’t know is that being a health care professional is not easy. It involves a lot of stress, emotionally, physically and psychologically. People deal with it in various ways and this can be one of them, the double life. At the end of your work shift you have to find your balance, and cope with the stress of your health care profession.
As much as I want to give my whole life to the arts, I can’t because for me it won’t get the bills paid. Even whilst in school pursing my major, I have a full time job. I don’t think there has ever been a time when I haven’t worked, because at the end of the day, you have to pay your bills.
All I’m saying is, there’s nothing wrong with having a professional career and pursing your passion during the weekend or whenever you’re free. I think this is what most people don’t get. You can have it all, but at the end of the day you have to put them in order, prioritize and attain each goal. This is why I am so proud of a friend of mine who graduated with a chemistry major, but on weekends or when she’s free, she pursues her true passion which is acting. I have so much respect for individuals who live the double life, as I call it. It takes a certain type of individual to do this.
Please don’t take this as me bashing anyone who decided to follow what they love and have a career from it. I have so much respect for such people as well because it’s hard to break through any career field, especially the arts. I put such people on a pedestal when it comes to such careers. All I’m saying is sometimes having a double life can be rewarding and a fall back for those of us that are torn with interests. You don’t have to trash one of your dreams to get the other. You can have both at the same time if you really want it.
